IT AS INTRODUCTORY SUBJECT
1. Join the sentences halves:
1-F 2-D 3-A 4-B 5-E 6-C
pg 123 BOOK activity 7
Rewrite the sentences using IT as introductory subjects and the words in brackets.
-It would be tactful of doctors not to compare the technology with a snake.
-It will be fascinating to watch the first operation of this kind.
-It won't be normal for patients to have open heart surgery in the future.
-It won't be necessary to keep patients in hospitals for so long with the new technique.
-It is amazing what a difference the robosnake will make to surgery
-It won't be much use arguing with doctors as this will be the only viable means of surgery.
-It will be a relief to spend such a short time in the operating theatre
-It is high time hospitals implemented this technology.
note: 'operating theatre' : mesa de operaciones (in case your were confused)
'it is high time'+ past simple: cuando quieres expresar que 'ya era hora'....sobre algo que debería haberse hecho antes
pg 124 ACTIVITY 4 EUPHEMISMS
You know what euphemisms are in Spanish, the same in English: those words which sound 'awckward, hard, embarrassing, despising...' and we use other words considered 'more appropiate, less straight, beating around the bush...'
In this exercise we have to classify the expressions according to what they refer to and if they have to do with AGE/HEALTH/ WEALTH
TRY FIRST TO SEE IF YOU CAN GUESS AND THEN CORRECT:
AGE: GETTING ON A BIT, OF ADVANCED YEARS, GOLDEN YEARS
HEALTH: HARD OF HEARING, VISUALLY IMPAIRED, GO DOWN WITH SOMETHING
WEALTH: IN REDUCED CIRCUMSTANCES, OF LIMITED MEANS, UNDERPRIVILEDGED
pg 125 ACTIVITY 5
COMPLETE THE SENTENCES USING EIGHT OF THE EUPHEMISMS IN EXERCISES 3 AND 4
1. UNDERPRIVILEDGED
2.GETTING ON A BIT
3.HARD-OF-HEARING
4.BETWEEN JOBS ( en paro, aparece en el ejercicio 3 de la página 124, con un listening que no hemos podido hacer)
5.GOLDER YEARS
6.IN REDUCED CIRCUNSTANCES
7.LET STAFF GO
8.GO DOWN WITH SOMETHING
pg 125 ACTIVITY 9 CONFIDENT AND TENTATIVE LANGUAGE
As you know by now, we have been dealing with using English but keeping distance from facts, either because we are not sure or because it is not clear , even when we don't want to sound too straight ( you know, being 'políticamente correcto').
These are some expressións you can use:
I DARE SAY...
IT IS EXTREMELY DOUBTFUL
I BET /
THERE IS NO CHANCE
IT SEEMS UNLIKELY
THERE'S NO DENYING
I SHOULDN'T THINK
BY NO MEANS
IT COULD BE THE CASE
THERE IS A SLIGHT POSSIBILITY
THERE'S NO HOPE/ A HOPE
I AM ABSOLUTELY POSITIVE
that's all for today, just keep track and try not to get lost.
Tomorrow I will post activities and vocabulary on the reading THE BLACK DEATH and some hints for the writing that I will ask you to send me next week.

PARAGRAPH 2: You can explain for example: why you like it, when you started, why you started, in fact, details of your experience with the hobby or sport, how often you practice, with whom....
PARAGRAPH 3: Now it is time to write about any negative aspect that you find, any difficulty that you would like to consider.
